Off Grace Bay

Four hours offshore is the standard unit of a Turks and Caicos holiday.

Snorkel mornings on the reef, catamarans with a swim ladder and a bar, and the runs out to cays nobody lives on. What each kind of boat day costs before you get to the dock.

Provo or Grand Turk

Providenciales has the beach. Grand Turk has the rest of the country.

Nearly everything bookable here leaves from Providenciales, and the cruise pier on Grand Turk runs a different island altogether. Start with the one your bed is on.

Booked out first

Boats, buggies and golf carts: what Turks and Caicos books first.

Clear hulls

The mangroves behind Providenciales, paddled through a glass floor.

The channels on the sheltered side of the island run waist-deep and flat, busy with rays, turtles and juvenile sharks. A transparent hull makes the floor of them the whole point. Most trips are two to three hours and go out on the tide.

Provo and Grand Turk, priced

Turks and Caicos is not a cheap island. Here is the spread.

Every tour on the site grouped by its per-person price. The bottom end is the tram, the tubing and the runs in from the airport; the top end is a boat with your name on it for the day.

Under $100

The Grand Turk tram, parasailing off the beach, tubing, and the shared runs from the airport.

$100–200

Where most of the island sits: half-day snorkel boats, clear kayaks, catamaran mornings, buggy tours.

$200 and up

Private charters, full days with lunch cooked aboard, and the boats you take for the whole party.

Only in Turks and Caicos

A wreck in shallow water, an island of golf carts, and iguanas that live nowhere else.

Turquoise water you can find anywhere in this sea. The rest of this list is local.

Little Water Cay

The iguanas that live nowhere else

The Turks and Caicos rock iguana holds on across a handful of uninhabited cays and nowhere else on earth. Little Water Cay sits ten minutes off Provo by boat and has boardwalks laid through the scrub, so you can walk among them without standing on the burrows. Most half-day cruises stop here; the good ones give you long enough to actually look.

La Famille Express

A freighter aground in shallow water

A cargo ship broke its tow in a hurricane and grounded on the banks off Provo, where it has sat upright ever since, hull clear of the water and reef growing over everything below it. Boats and jet skis run out to it through the day, and the snorkelling around the hull is shallow enough for anyone who can swim.

Grand Turk

An island that runs on golf carts

Grand Turk is around six miles long and has no use for anything faster. The carts go out by the dozen when a ship is in, and an afternoon of one covers the salt-era streets of Cockburn Town, the lighthouse at the north end and whichever beach is empty. Reserve before the ship docks; the fleet is finite.

Before you land in Provo

Turks and Caicos runs on one departure a day. Four to lock in early.

Most of this island can be sorted from a beach chair the afternoon before. These four run on tides, ship schedules and a single sailing, and they fill.

  1. 01Mangrove Clear Kayak TourThe mangrove channels are paddled on the tide, so the departure moves through the week and the workable slots go first.
  2. 022 Hour Champagne Sunset Cruise from Grace Bay, Providenciales (Adult Only)One sailing a day, and the boat leaves whether or not you made it back off the beach.
  3. 03Drive GDT – Golf Cart RentalsGrand Turk keeps a finite fleet and a cruise ship empties it inside an hour. Reserve before the ship docks.
  4. 04Morning Half Day Cruise from Providenciales with Snorkeling and Iguana IslandLittle Water Cay is a protected reserve reached only by boat, and the trips that call there run to a fixed timetable.
When the trades blow

The wind gets up here from December, and the answer is the sheltered side.

The north-east trades blow hardest through the winter and put chop on the ocean-side reef. The channels behind the island stay flat, and Grand Turk holds a whole day of dry land in reserve: carts, buggies and an old town you can walk in an hour.
